The ancient Indian education emerged from Vedas as they were the main sources of Indian philosophy of life. The attitude of the people towards life was intellectual and spiritual, rather than materialistic. The basis of admission was moral fitness and unimpeachable conduct. The pupils belonging to a lower order of moral conduct was forbidden to live in the house of the preceptor. The discipline of Brahmacharya or Celibacy was compulsory for all in gurukula system of education. During Ancient and present both, Individual is the teaching unit and all-round development of the child’s personality is chief aim of education. National Education Policy (NEP), 2020 has emphasized on basic three elements of Indianness, i.e., Indian language, culture and tradition. The NPE, 2020 is also in tune with ancient education system. Structure of education, curriculum, method of teaching and examination system suggested in the vedic education system and NEP 2020 are discussed in this paper. Criticism on NEP 2020 is also focused in this paper.
