A Study on Academic Anxiety of Senior Secondary School Students in relation to Type of School, Locale and Academic Stream

Academic anxiety can be defined as an overwhelming feeling of disturbance and distress among the students from the environment of the academic institutions including teacher or certain subjects like mathematics, English etc. In the era of continuous academic competition, every parent wishes to see their child reach the acme of success. Their excessive desire to see their child climb the ladder of success puts a lot of presser on students that can be a cause of academic anxiety (Pandey & Ahmad, 2008). The present study explore the discrepancy in academic anxiety of senior secondary students in relation to type of school (government and private), locale (urban and rural) and academic stream (science and humanities). The sample for the study consisted of 241 senior secondary students from different schools of Purulia district of West Bengal. Standardized tool developed by Sharma & Shakir (2019) was used for measuring the level of academic anxiety of senior secondary school students. The statistical techniques utilized in the present study were mean, standard deviation and t-test. The results indicated a significant difference in the academic anxiety of senior secondary students in relation to type of school, locale and academic stream. Students from government senior secondary schools have more academic anxiety in comparison to the students from private schools. The students studying in rural schools have more academic anxiety than students studying in urban schools. Similarly, students of humanities stream have higher levels of academic anxiety than students from science stream.
