Creating a Culture of Care: A Delphi Study of Secondary Teacher Leaders on Promoting Social Emotional Learning

This paper explores the perspectives of secondary teacher leaders on the promotion of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) within educational settings. Acknowledging the increasing importance of SEL in fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment, this research aims to identify key elements and strategies that contribute to creating a culture of care in secondary schools along with identifying challenges related to the implementation of SEL in secondary schools. This phenomenological study utilized Delphi method to elicit responses from an expert panel through telephonic interviews and electronic survey within a 2-round process. The expert panel consisted of 12 teacher leaders of the government secondary schools of Bargarh district, Odisha and they were selected by their principal based on 5 prominent characteristics of effective teacher leaders. The responses of Delphi round 1 elicited through interviews were analyzed thematically. The data collected in Delphi round 1 were used to construct four-point Likert scale for Delphi round 2. The data collected in Delphi round 2 were analyzed through frequency, percentage, and mode. The findings uncovered key elements, effective strategies, and challenges related to the implementation of SEL at secondary level. This research contributes to the growing body of literature on SEL in education and provides practical recommendations for educators and policymakers seeking to promote a culture of care in secondary schools.
