Teachers’ Perspective on the Barriers to Online Teaching and Learning during Covid-19 Pandemic

Education sector has seen a surge in digital learning through concurrent advancements in the technology which eventually opened several avenues worth exploring for both seekers and stakeholders of education. This technology-based learning has been functioning in the complimentary capacity ever since, but with the advent of COVID-19, technology-based learning substituted the conventional classroom scenario, creating a gap of an authentic classroom. In conventional classrooms, with technology acting in a complimentary capacity, the digital learning scenario acted as a catalyst in enhancing the understanding of students but in times of crisis as grave as COVID-19, the make shift arrangement for online teaching learning seemed as the most suitable option. Teachers, with no practical preparedness for online teaching learning found it a bit cumbersome to resort to complete substitution of conventional classrooms with online teaching learning. This, lack of technical expertise in times of life-threatening crisis created void in smooth teaching and hence the teachers, faced their fair share of challenges like lack of digital literacy, sense of isolation, inexperience of intrinsic motivation etc. This paper aims to address teachers’ perspective on the barriers to online teaching and learning during covid-19 pandemic. It analyses the impact of online teaching-learning on teachers and proposes reasonable measures to manage them.
